The only way we build wood fences: driven metal posts with real wood boards. No concrete. No rot at the post. No frost heave. Just a beautiful wood fence that actually lasts in Winnipeg.
Why Hybrid Construction
Every wood fence we build at Pete Fixes uses driven metal posts with wood boards attached — and this is the only method we offer. We stopped building traditional all-wood-post fences because they fail in Winnipeg's climate. Wood posts set in concrete absorb moisture at the ground line, rot from the inside out, and eventually snap off. Manitoba's gumbo clay expands and contracts with every freeze-thaw cycle, heaving concrete footings and pushing posts out of alignment. Within five to ten years, most all-wood fences in Winnipeg are leaning, broken, or ready for replacement.
Our hybrid method eliminates every one of those problems. We drive steel posts into the ground using hydraulic equipment — no holes to dig, no concrete to pour, no disturbed soil to settle. The metal post anchors below the frost line in undisturbed earth, so it does not heave. The wood boards attach to the metal frame and never touch the ground, so they do not rot. The result is a fence that looks like a traditional wood fence but lasts two to three times longer. And because we skip the concrete entirely, installation is faster, cleaner, and often costs the same as or less than a conventional wood fence build.
Vertical Board Styles
Vertical board fencing is the most popular residential style in Winnipeg, and we build it in every configuration. Choose from standard 1x6 flat-top boards for a clean modern look, traditional dog-ear boards for a classic neighbourhood fence, or board-on-board construction for complete privacy from every angle. Board-on-board overlaps adjacent boards on alternating sides of the rail, eliminating the gaps that appear as lumber dries and shrinks — a detail that matters in Manitoba's dry winter air.
All vertical board fences are built with pressure-treated lumber as the standard. For homeowners who want a premium look and natural rot resistance, we also offer Western red cedar boards. Cedar weathers to a beautiful silver-grey over time or can be stained to maintain its warm tone. Whether you choose pressure-treated or cedar, the boards attach to our metal post framework with stainless or coated fasteners designed to prevent staining and corrosion.
Horizontal Plank
Horizontal plank fences have become one of the most requested styles in Winnipeg's newer neighbourhoods, and our hybrid construction method is ideally suited for them. We build horizontal fences using 2x6 planks mounted between metal posts, creating the wide-board contemporary look that pairs perfectly with modern home designs. The thicker 2x6 lumber spans between posts without sagging or bowing — a common problem when horizontal boards are attached to wood posts that twist over time.
Because our metal posts are perfectly straight and stay that way, horizontal planks maintain their clean, level lines for the life of the fence. We can build horizontal fences with tight spacing for full privacy or with deliberate gaps between boards for a semi-private screen effect. Optional trim boards or cap rails give the fence a finished, custom-built appearance that elevates the look of any property.
Post Options
We offer two metal post systems for hybrid wood fences, and both are driven into the ground the same way. The first is the Postmaster system — a galvanized steel post engineered to be completely hidden inside the fence. The boards and rails wrap around the Postmaster post so that from the outside, the fence looks like a traditional all-wood build. Nobody will know there is a steel backbone inside unless you tell them. This is the most popular option for homeowners who want the classic wood fence appearance with none of the drawbacks.
The second option is a visible 2x2 powder-coated steel post, typically in black. This post sits on the surface of the fence as a deliberate design element, creating a modern mixed-material look that pairs especially well with horizontal plank styles and contemporary home architecture. The black powder coating resists scratches and UV fading, and the contrast of dark metal against natural wood creates a striking visual statement. Both post types are driven to the same depth and offer the same structural performance — the choice is purely aesthetic.
